The Birdcage Sydney - Whirly Bird experience

I recently took my mum out for a bit of a different night out. It’s something she has never experienced until now. What could I be talking about!? The Birdcage Sydney – that’s what! The Birdcage Sydney is a glamourous burlesque show, accompanied by a beautiful dinner at Whirly Bird in Pyrmont.

The spectacular show is packed with awe-inspiring live performances – think feathers, flouncing, sequins and plenty of razzle dazzle! Paying true homage to the mysteriously captivating era that was the 1920s, the exceptionally talented showgirls certainly know how to entertain. If you’re looking for an evening of glitz and glamour, you’ve found it.

The dinner includes a coupe of GH Mumm ‘Grand Cordon’ on arrival – yes please – followed by a 3-course meal served as share-style banquet. Did I mention the bespoke gin cocktail?! It was a really nice way to enjoy beautiful produce presented slightly differently. The food felt abundant and packed with flavour – just what a hungry mama on a night out needs! The banquet kicked off with a platter of salumi, pickled vegetables, parfait and mozzarella & saffron risotto balls – yaaas! For main, we devoured a slow roasted duck leg and apple & fennel stuffed pork, and finished off with a decadent Cointreau-filled soft centred chocolate fondant and a rum & banana semi-freddo. Not to mention a cheese board which showed its face shortly afterwards – just when I thought I couldn’t eat anymore! Still, I gave it a good go!

All in all, it was a wonderful twist on the traditional girlsnight out. I loved having that one-on-one time with Mum, and it was even better to be able to experience something that was new to both of us. If you’d like to book in yourself, the show opens every Saturday evening, and includes the delicious three course meal and drink on arrival, to match costs just $89 per person. If you need an excuse to leave the kids at home and enjoy some alone time, this is it – the show is strictly for grown-ups! Enjoy!

Escape Room experience date

I recently took my hubby on a little date day to experience an escape room – I love being able to involve him in activities to do with my blog, and this one was certainly something different from the norm. Being a blogger and having a young family means our weekends are usually jam-packed with activities, but this one was not like anything we’ve ever done before!

Escape rooms are hot right now – it seems everyone is talking about them. Lots of my friends and family have done them and loved them, so I was really excited to try one out.

What is an Escape Room?

If you’re one of the few people who hasn’t heard about the popularity of escape rooms, the experience basically involves being locked in a game floor with only one hour to work out how to free yourself: not for claustrophobic s! You’ll be presented with puzzles and problem-solving games to help you escape – it’s a race against the clock.

The Theme

Our theme for the day was ‘Avatar - The Secret of Pandora’. I won’t give too much away in case you decide to go, but basically the Avatar theme puts you in the year 2090 and the earth is in crisis! Ebola-X virus is threatening the world and everyone must earn their survival. Our role was as part of a team of scientists who travel back to the Pandora Moon and retrieve information from an abandoned lab that holds the key to curing the virus.

The Verdict

We loved it! It was a real lesson in communication and teamwork – it would be fantastic for groups of friends or even colleagues and co-workers. Hubby and I were able to communicate well, thank goodness! It really taught us to stop and work together – a nice break from being glued to our smartphones, for sure.
