Top tips to declutter the home

With the New Year in full swing and the festivities behind us, what better way to start the new year than decluttering and organising your home.

Below are some top tips I like to follow:

#1 Come Prepared
Ever find yourself half-way through cleaning your house and regretting your decision? The best way to combat this is choosing a day to tackle this task where you have minimal errands planned and can designate 2-3 hours to the job. That way you won’t feel distracted or overwhelmed. Make sure to also have items like shopping bags for items you don’t want to keep and tape measure for measuring out space for new storage options.

#2 Divide and Conquer
Let’s be honest. We all have an inner hoarder inside of us that always questions what if? When it comes to getting rod of certain items. The best way to conquer this is to take everything you need to get rid of and make three piles, a yes pile, a no pile and a maybe pile. With the items from the no pile consider selling them to make a bit of extra cash or donate them to charity to do a good deed.

#3 Consider External Storage Options
Do you ever find your house full of items that you just don’t need all year round such as Christmas decorations, seasonal sports equipment and even things like big Winter coats? It might be a good idea to place them in storage to create extra space and less clutter. This is also a great way to deal with the “maybe pile” of items from step #2 to see whether you really need these items or not.

#4 Create More Space with Boxes
Do you find yourself rummaging around in the morning looking for everyday items? One way to overcome this is by creating extra space with boxes that you can put everyday items such as shoes, coats and bags into by the front door. This is also a great way to organise your kid’s playroom so it stays tidy and nothing goes missing. An excellent company is Hire a Box  This is efficient and stress-free way to hire boxes for as little as $2.40 or buy boxes from $3.90. They have three different box options so you’re bound to find something that will suit your needs.
